Some of you may remember the hat I made for Isaac last Thanksgiving. He was about six weeks old, and was still in the nicu. I may have been slightly unhinged at that point, because I knit him this ridiculous turkey hat.
This year, I have improved upon the turkey hat, and I’m sharing the pattern. turkey hat pattern pdf
Apologies for the lack of photos; I’ll get a photo session together in the next few days, but don’t want to miss getting the pattern out in time for Thanksgiving!
The pattern is sized for a 12 month old. You can size it up or down by changing the size of the hat; just use an even number of stitches and adjust the decreases after row 5 to match the number of stitches you have, adding or deleting rows to work down to 12 stitches. If you go smaller, I would still keep at least 16 stitches as the base for the legs, to maintain structural integrity, and maybe not do as many even rows at 36 stitches (rows 6-15). There are many natural variations in the turkey world, so whatever you come up with will be fabulous.
Last year’s hat was done in Red Heart Soft acrylic yarn (because the idea came to me at around 8:00 p.m., which meant Michaels); this year I used Cascade 220 wool, with Wool-Ease for the bones because I wanted a brighter white than you usually get with wool. I’m intrigued by the idea of doing a felted version of this; if anyone wants to give it a go, I’d love to see the results!

Cute enough to entice me to try knitting again.
That is possibly the greatest thing I’ve ever seen.
That’s sooo cute!!! Now I wish that I had kids. On another note, this is pretty funny, my captcha was “asshat” :X
i would love to sell these on my site for next year! email me at info at moderndose dot com
Makes me think “Viking Turkey”
Best. Hat. Ever.
This is just way too cute … I have to blog this one, it’s a first and “not for the birds!” : )
just wanted to let you know that i’ve featured this hat on the daily chum. too cu te for words!
This is FABULOUS! I’ll be linking.
Super cute pattern! Any tips on supersizing it for a 9 yr old? I don’t know any small noggins, but I know a 9 and 15yr old that will want this. Thanks and best wishes!
OMG! That is adorable! I need to make one!
OMG, that is the cutest thing! Thanks for sharing!
I feel this hat is vitally important to my daughter’s wardrobe…. unfortunately for her everything I have ever tried to knit ends up resembling a diseased potholder… Is there any way I can purchase a hat from you?

OH MY!! That is darling!! Wish I had thought of something like that when mine where little.
Only for the bird brained. Tee hee.
Very cute but mostly hilarious…I’d even say plucky.
TOO CUTE !!! I wish that I knew how to knit. Has anyone out there tried crocheting one?
Here is my version, for an seven year old. Used size 10 needles and no stuffing..yet. He loves it!
That’s one amazingly cute hat!!
I wish I could get one of these for school…I don’t know anyone who knits =/
Hello,
The hat is so adorable! Is there any way I can purchase this hat? Thanks, and I hope your son is doing well – mine was also in the NIC-U for some time, I know how difficult that can be. Thanks for your help!
Round 3 of the legs should read: k2, m1, rep around. That should solve the math problem. Everything else seems to work out.
I was looking for an unusual baby hat—this asshat is assum!! Will knit it for baby boy due in Jan.
How do I size this to big large enough for an adult? My husband wants one
Seriously. It’s great! Thanks for publishing.
Loved your hat – but I do not knit well – so I took it as inspiration and made a crochet one… My crochet turkey hat
Thanks for the great idea!
When I first learned to knit I came across this hat looking for patterns to practice with and thought it was adorable. Well I just found out I’m due ON Thanksgiving day so I decided I just had to make this hat for when the little one meets the family. My dad (nicknamed Turkey since he was in about 4th grade) will get a kick out of the new little turkey in the family ^_^ Thank you soooo much for making the perfect pattern
I love this and my friend wants one! Have you sized it up for adults? And if not, do have any tips for doing so?
This was adorable. My great-nephew born 3 months early. He is in the NICU right now and weighs 2 pounds. He is doing well, but has to stay and grow. His mom can hold him and will enjoy this hat I am sure. I ran out tonight and bought some sport weight yarn and will use smaller needles. How creative you are. Thanks for sharing.
I tried to get the directions for knitting the hat and can’t seem to get it. How do I get it? Thanks. Marjorie
I am almost done but am a bit confused by bone part of the leg. It says to “graft stitches on needles” Does that mean to alternate binding off with the 2 needles? I have been knitting for 45 years and have not seen that direction. Never too late to learn something new. Please advise. Thanks.
I made this for a friend’s baby and it was a hit! Still waiting for the pics though. I sized to hopefully fit at Thanksgiving, but little Alice was born with a huge head, so I’ll have to wait and see. Thanks for the great pattern!
Is anyone else having problems with this pattern? I’m already stuck at the beginning at row 5. How do I Psso twice with only one stitch? It says “S1, K1, psso twice”. Please tell me if I’m reading it wrong. Also if there are other mistakes in the pattern, I would appreciate a heads up. No one else seems to have a problem knitting this so I think it’s just me.
I’m so flustered now but I really want to make this hat, any help is appreciated.
Thanks!
OMG – My 31 year-old son wants one! He sent me this. Don’t ask me how he found it, but I think the hat is wonderful.
But for the fact that I know you really are very busy, my first thought about this hat was, “Someone has waaaay too much time on her hands!” But, I am going to download it because I hope to have grandchildren someday and the window of opportunity for totally humiliating them seems to get smaller and smaller. Gobble! Gobble! Have a great holiday.!
Lindsey
Are you people serious? Your talking about putting a dead cooked turkey on your child’s head. I can’t wait for the pig roast hat with an apple in it’s mouth. I sincerely hope everyone who likes this hat is just joking.
This is the cutest thing ever. I would love to make my grandson one but I only crochet. Do you happen to have a crochet pattern? I would pay you for one. Thanks Marcie
Hi im so sorry but what does dpn’s stands for new at this so could some1 let me know thanks
oh…my…gosh…I am a mom of a 4 1/2 month old “surprise” baby, who is just the light of my life. I had accepted at 38 and just finishing a divorce that I would never have a biological child, then lo and behold, here he came!
I had hurt my back and had surgery about 4 years ago…and during my recovery, taught myself to knit. I had stopped during my divorce and while I was moving, etc…but now I want to start making some really cute, but what will invariably be embarrassing hats for my little Joshie…Yours is going to be what I predict to be hands down the best if I can get it figured out!
It’s a good thing I have gotten used to frogging, but I will get it done for him…thank you SO much for posting this!!!
i LOVE this hat. Do you sell them?
Need a turkey pattern, to cover cadburys cream egg, (The new egg has a green middle for christmas) we had great success knitting the easter chics for the hospital were I work voluntary £142. look forward to your reply.#Val
Absolutely wonderful…my grandkids will love this.
Thank you for your generosity in sharing this. May you receive the blessings tenfold. Thanks!1
Hi there,
Im trying to knit this in time for christmas, but i don’t understand the knit pattern (im from the uk and a total novice when it comes to knitting!) are you able to change the terminology? random request i know! yours is the only pattern i’ve come across, where the hat looks really good!
many thanks
robyn
I am anxious to start this hat. My grandson was in the NICU for 130+ days and to keep my mind busy I knitted hats for him. He is now almost 10 months old and I can’t wait to make this hat for him for THanksgiving!
Oh my gosh, I LOVE this hat….. BUT, I can’t knit, I only know crochet! I’m due to have our baby (by c-section) this coming Friday 11-11-11, and would love to make this for him. He would wear it proudly for Thanksgiving this year, do you know of any way to convert the pattern to crochet? Hope to hear from you
Regards,
KC
Do you have a similar pattern for crocheting? I LOVE this hat but i don’t know how to knit!
Cutest hat ever. Can’t wait to make it. Just one question, directions call for two sizes of dpns. Which part is for which dpn? Did I miss this somewhere?
